We are one of the few prenatal diagnosis centers in Austria that offer invasive diagnostics as early as the 12th week of pregnancy.
During chorionic villus sampling, a puncture needle is used to remove tissue from the placenta through the abdominal wall under constant ultrasound guidance. The tissue is then examined for chromosomal abnormalities. According to the latest studies, the risk of miscarriage in prenatal diagnosis centers is 0.25%.

During a chorionic villus sampling (CVS), a thin puncture needle is inserted into the placenta under ultrasound guidance and with local anesthesia. This allows tissue to be obtained for genetic testing.
Chorionic villus sampling (placenta puncture) can be performed from the 12th week of pregnancy. Chorionic villus sampling is primarily recommended when there is an increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities following the Combined Test or NIPT.
The result of the chorionic villus sampling is 100% reliable, provided there is no placental mosaicism. Discrepancies between the cells of the placenta and the cells of the baby (placental mosaicism) are extremely rare. They are detected in about 1 to 2 out of 100 chorionic villus samplings. If the result of the chorionic villus sampling shows chromosomal changes, further prenatal tests are performed.
The risk of miscarriage after chorionic villus sampling (placental puncture) lasts for 3-5 days after the procedure. At 0.5%, the risk is particularly low.
The result of the chorionic villus sampling (placental puncture) is available after just 24 hours with the rapid test for the three most common chromosomal disorders. In the case of a detailed analysis, the result is available after about one week.
